My FiL and I have totally bonded over our love of photography. When we spend sometime with my hubster's family, my FiL always tries to squeeze in a photo field trip. This time, we made it simple and went to the Farmer's Market. The colors were vibrant and enticing. Unfortunately, we got there a bit late, so it was very crowded. Barely, any elbow room to squeeze in the photos that I managed to take. The light was also too intense. I'm happy that I did get to snap a few photos.
I was introduced to this photo series through Photojojo. Their caption for the photo is "A devastating and beautiful series of Detroit's abandoned buildings." Those two adjectives describe the series perfectly. As I flipped through the photos, all I could imagine was how mesmerizing Detroit must have been.
I was so worried that my Photo365 project would be so redundant and look almost exactly like my blog here. To my great surprise, it's revealing main themes in my life and photography style. I'm learning even more about myself. Apparently, I am a foodie. Most of my photos have been food related. I also heavily rely on perfect natural lighting and macro photos. I don't quite know why macro is totally my style. Am I lazy when it comes to composing my shots? Oh gosh, I hope not. Instead, I would like to say that I'm very good at noticing and enjoying the details in life. Life is all about how you spin it.
If you're very perceptive, you may have noticed a new link underneath my profile photo. If you didn't notice, no worries. I don't think I would have either. I started a 365 project with my friend Lisa. What will be different? It'll be just one picture a day and all pictures will be taken by me. No collaborations with the hubster. Fewer words. Even the layout is simpler, so the focus is on the photos. I'm hoping that this project will help me stop being such a slacker when it comes to processing and adjusting the settings on my camera. Why tell you here? Well, I figure that the more that I share it; the more likely I'll stick with it. Hopefully, I can balance both blogs. Wish me luck!
Over this holiday break, I began reading The Geography of Bliss. In the chapter about Switzerland, biophilia is introduced. It's about our relationship with nature. "Proximity to nature doesn't just give us a warm, fuzzy feeling. It affects our physiology in real, measurable ways. It's not a giant leap to conclude that proximity to nature makes us happier."
Before I get all into nature, I must admit that I haven't always been nature's biggest fan. It wasn't until my hubster took me along on his hikes that I began to entertain the idea of going out and enjoying nature. Most important, it wasn't until I had a camera in my hand that I really enjoyed being out in nature. I love looking at the details. After seeing this fantastic mushroom photo, I went out on my own quest to find some interesting mushrooms to photograph. Yes, I was happy when I stumbled across these toadstools.
This photo of Pismo Beach from 2003 started my love of photography. I'm pretty sure my hubster took it with our little Pentax point-and-shoot. Maybe, I took it? I honestly don't remember. I do remember going home and uploading the photo. I instantly loved it. I wanted to take more photos just like it. Seven years later, it still grabs hold of my imagination. Good thing, I'm still snapping away.
Ever since our trip to New York, I've been taking photos of random dogs. They are just so interesting. They have their personalities. With all the crap that their moms and dads can by them now, they even have their own sense of style. It gets tricky though sometimes. Like the photo above, I'm pretty sure that the shirtless guys with the dog thought I was taking a photo of them. If they only knew the truth.
Ever since I learned about cool and warm colors on the color wheel, I've loved organizing things by color. It's one of my OCD tendencies that has never and probably never will subside. It all began with my crayon box. Not just the 8 or 12 crayon box. I had the 64 crayon box. I was an ambitious kid with way too much time on my hands. I still organize things by color. My closet is in even arranged just like my crayon box. When I saw the picture above, the geeky-five-year-old-trying-to-decide-if-red-orange-or-orange-red-goes-right-after-red deep inside of me smiled.
A few months ago, I wrote this post about wanting a Diana F+. My hubster was sweet enough to get it for me. I've been experimenting with it, and I haven't been all that successful. If I'm lucky, I'll like half of the photos on a roll. Those statistics are too low even for me, especially when a roll cost about $5 and another $8 to develop. My biggest problem is that I have an unsteady hand. When I do multiple exposures, it's not that noticeable.
Now, it's time to do some problem solving. I've spent some time looking for useful tips. They were hard to come by. Boo! I did find this nifty modification. I'm going to make it this weekend and finish up my latest roll. Maybe, I'll be brave enough to experiment with the flash. Hopefully, it'll get better. I did want a challenge. Perhaps, I'll just ask for lots of 120mm film for my Christmas gift, so I won't feel as guilty about the costs. Hi Santa, I've been very good, just so you know.
