After the long day before, we had to wake up ridiculously early to go to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Our reservation was for 8:00, which we thought meant that the ferry leaves at 8:00. Silly tourists! We rode the subway from uptown all the way to the southern most tip of Manhattan. We got to the ticket line at about 10 to 8. They didn't open until 8:30 and the ferry didn't leave until 9.
For some reason, I thought the ferry ride would be more momentous than it was. It was definitely comforting to see her off in the distance, but there wasn't the wow factor. We decided to go to the top of the crown. That ended up being totally worth it. You get VIP treatment like going to the shorter lines for things. I really enjoyed seeing the original torch and the museum documenting the construction of Lady Liberty. As for the crown, it was okay. It's nice to say you did it. It doesn't have the clearest view, but you get to see the waves of her hair and her nose. The trek really wasn't the bad. It was only 300+ steps.
We loved Ellis Island! They did such a wonderful job making interesting exhibits. It's mind boggling to think that Ellis Island once sat abandoned and unwanted. It's such a cornerstone of our country's history. We particularly liked the personalized exhibits on the top level with all the passports and other personal items.
Afterwards, we went to the Strand. It's known as the 18 miles of books. Once we got off the subway, we stumbled across this red truck with a-mazing Greek food! My hubster had the lamb gyro straight off the kabob. I had a delicious falafel sandwich. It's on 8th St and Broadway. We went back on Saturday and to our disappointment they weren't there. Boo! Later that evening, we ate at a quaint Moroccan place around the corner from our B&B. Marrakich Restaurant and Cafe helped with my hubster's quest to eat a meal from a different country each night. What a cute idea, right? Back to Marrakich, the Koffa Kabob was flavorful and tender and the Moroccan mint tea was rockin'. A little kitty ended up stopping by during dinner. It was nice to just walk home after dinner.
