Sarcasm

For Charlotte's Web, the kiddos have to pick a sentence (they call it quotes) and have to describe what it means. It's definitely one of the highlights of my day. I get to have really interesting conversations with Mr. J- about his interpretations and quotation selections. This is our conversation from today:

Mr. J-: I need help selecting a quote.
Me: Okay. How about "Some Pig!"? It's the first message that Charlotte wrote in her web.
Mr. J-: Okay. But what does it mean?
Me: Here's an example. (picks up his pencil) Wow, Mr. J-, this is some pencil!
Mr. J-: (smiles) But some people say it sarcastically. (pauses) But not Charlotte.
Me: (completely amazed) Why not Charlotte?
Mr. J-: (uses obvious tone) Because she likes him (meaning Wilbur).

I was thoroughly impressed. Can you believe a 7 year old picking up on the concept of sarcasm? Some adults still don't even get it! This kiddo constantly amazes me. From first impressions, you wouldn't think he's amazing, but he is. It's these kinds of moments that it's even more wonderful to work with kiddos.
